Husbandry & Notes

  • Near-zero maintenance: set up in a day, ran a full year with no water changes or hands in tank
  • Only 4-5 water changes in 2 years, done for freshness not nutrient control
  • Runs stock all-in-one gear — skimmer, return pump, filter sock — no upgrades or extra flow
  • Clean filter sock only when flow noise changes, roughly 3-4 times per year
  • No dosing; heavy feeding with corals and fish consuming nutrients keeps system balanced
  • Keeps light mostly blue (~8hr), which hides algae and pests and reduces their growth
  • Practices 'benign neglect' — tolerate minor pests rather than chase perfection
  • Biological pest control: peppermint shrimp for aiptasia, emerald crab planned for valonia
This tank gives me no issues so it's like a wheel that doesn't squeak it gets no oil.
We've done four maybe five water changes ever, these were never to address nutrients.
This tank has the big four pests that people worry about.
Some of my other tanks both benefit and suffer from constant tinkering.
We just keep it super simple and super enjoyable.
