The 1-Day Nano Reef (2-Year Update)

The 1-Day Nano Reef (2-Year Update)

Tank type
Mixed Reef
Tank was aquascaped and stocked in a single day, then left almost entirely alone — no water changes or intervention for a full year, proving stability through simplicity.

A two-year-old Red Sea all-in-one nano reef set up in a single day and run with extreme neglect — only 4-5 water changes ever, no dosing, and stock equipment. It thrives on simplicity, showcasing a gold torch, green star polyps, and sun polyps while tolerating minor pests managed by biological grazers.

What sets this tank apart
One-day setup, hands-off for years
Tank was aquascaped and stocked in a single day, then left almost entirely alone — no water changes or intervention for a full year, proving stability through simplicity.
▶ Jump to this moment
Mostly-blue light as pest camouflage
Runs ~100% blue spectrum most of the day, which both suppresses algae growth and visually hides cyano and hair algae, reducing the urge to intervene.
▶ Jump to this moment
Benign neglect philosophy
Deliberately tolerates the 'big four' pests and lets biological grazers slowly whittle them down instead of aggressive treatment — a low-stress, stable approach credited to Mark van der Waal.
▶ Jump to this moment
No dosing, feeding drives nutrients
Skips all supplements and lets heavy feeding plus coral/fish uptake self-regulate the small system, keeping chemistry stable without tinkering.

Filtration
Red Sea Protein skimmer
Red Sea
Protein skimmer
Protein skimmer
Stock rear-compartment skimmer that ran flipped the wrong way for a while and got cleaned a handful of times in two years — it pulls little and nobody minds.
Lighting
Red Sea ReefLED 50

Display light
~100% blue for 8 hours with whites peaking just 20-30% — the mostly-blue schedule suppresses algae growth and visually hides what does grow.
Flow & Circulation
Red Sea Stock return pump
Red Sea
Stock return pump
Return pump
Unmodified stock pump — two years in, the tank still runs exactly the gear it shipped with, no upgrades and no extra flow.
Dosing
None
Supplementation
💡 Budget hack
Nothing dosed in two years — heavy feeding plus coral and fish uptake keeps the small system balanced without tinkering.

Husbandry & Notes

  • Near-zero maintenance: set up in a day, ran a full year with no water changes or hands in tank
  • Only 4-5 water changes in 2 years, done for freshness not nutrient control
  • Runs stock all-in-one gear — skimmer, return pump, filter sock — no upgrades or extra flow
  • Clean filter sock only when flow noise changes, roughly 3-4 times per year
  • No dosing; heavy feeding with corals and fish consuming nutrients keeps system balanced
  • Keeps light mostly blue (~8hr), which hides algae and pests and reduces their growth
  • Practices 'benign neglect' — tolerate minor pests rather than chase perfection
  • Biological pest control: peppermint shrimp for aiptasia, emerald crab planned for valonia
This tank gives me no issues so it's like a wheel that doesn't squeak it gets no oil.
We've done four maybe five water changes ever, these were never to address nutrients.
This tank has the big four pests that people worry about.
Some of my other tanks both benefit and suffer from constant tinkering.
We just keep it super simple and super enjoyable.
