Graham Stephan's 310-Gallon Reef

Graham Stephan's 310-Gallon Reef

by Graham Stephan
Volume
310 gal
Dimensions
72" x 33" x 33"
Tank type
Mixed Reef
Leaves filter socks uncleaned for weeks and only cleans one at a time, deliberately building nutrients because the low fish load kept the tank too clean and caused SPS tip burn. Corals grew healthier once he stopped obsessively cleaning.

Graham Stephan's 310-gallon peninsula-style mixed reef (plus ~50 gallon sump) has been running 18 months and grown out entirely from small frags with no Acropora loss or RTN. It's run for stability with intentionally elevated nutrients, low alkalinity (~7.5 dKH), a calcium reactor plus kalkwasser, and an outdoor chiller. Fast-growing corals and pests like palys and Aiptasia are the main ongoing management challenges.

What sets this tank apart
Intentionally dirty filter socks
Leaves filter socks uncleaned for weeks and only cleans one at a time, deliberately building nutrients because the low fish load kept the tank too clean and caused SPS tip burn. Corals grew healthier once he stopped obsessively cleaning.
▶ Jump to this moment
Drop temperature to kill pests
Lowers tank temp to 76-77F to stifle Monti-eating nudibranchs and other pests, since corals are hyper-adaptable to temperature but pests are not. Can be done immediately with his outdoor chiller.
▶ Jump to this moment
Outdoor-plumbed chiller
Tank is plumbed outside and the chiller sits outdoors with its own electricity, so it's silent inside the house and handles Nevada heat while enabling rapid temp control.
▶ Jump to this moment
Alk-only supplement over reactor
Runs both calcium and kalkwasser reactors but still doses ESV single-part alkalinity separately because ALK stubbornly drops from fast coral growth, keeping it pinned at 7-7.5.

Ca/Alk supplementation
Even with a kalk reactor on top, fast growth drags alk down — ESV single-part tops it off to hold a deliberately low 7-7.5 dKH.

Husbandry & Notes

  • Runs elevated nutrients on purpose - leaves filter socks dirty for weeks, low fish load
  • Keeps alkalinity low at 7-7.5 dKH; higher than ~9 causes SPS tip burn
  • Doses ESV single-part alkalinity to supplement calcium reactor which can't hold ALK up
  • Added sandbed later for alkalinity stability after running bare-bottom caused ALK swings
  • Targets stability: calcium ~420, temp ~78F, salinity 1.027, flatline over chasing numbers
  • Uses 3 alk test kits (Salifert, Hanna, Apex) cross-checked for consistent trending
  • Runs calcium reactor plus kalkwasser reactor, topped off every few days
  • Lower tank temperature to ~76-77F to stifle pests like Monti-eating nudibranchs
  • Chiller plumbed and located outside the house for silent, isolated temperature control

I've not lost a single Acro in this tank, no RTN, very little browning - the frags are bulletproof.
I was having an issue at the very beginning if the tank was too clean I'd raise my ALK to nine and get tip burn on the SPS.
Aptasia isn't even close to the worst, and everybody has aptasia.
What you're seeing today is what the tank was two weeks ago.
The palys were a big mistake - I should have listened to everyone who told me don't get those.
